THE YEAR 2020
    JANUARY 2020 SUMMARY
    
     					Springfield Park, Glen Allen, Virginia Summary January 2020 
     
    January was very warm for the first 16 days then was below average to the 23rd then near average to the end of the month. 
    This is clearly shown on the graph for January. 
    Note on the graph the 11th and 14th the unusual occurrence where the minimum temp. was above the average maximum temperature. 
    The max. departure for the month was 35.8°F on the 11th and was the only day Richmond had a daily record tied for the date. 
     The average relative humidity for January was 72.9 percent, a new record with a departure of 6.9 percent, 
    which was related to the warmer than normal temperatures. 
    There was only one cold period with dry cold air. The average minimum temperature was 32.7°F a 5.4°F departure for January.
     The highest minimum was 46.5°F a 12.4°F departure. 
    The highest maximum of 71.9°F on the 12th tied for 3rd place for January. 
    The average ground temperature at one foot for January was 45.8°F, a new record for the month.  
    On the 28th I observed two daffodils blooming in our neighborhood which is the earliest I can remember. 
    The monthly mean temp. for January was 42.7°F, a new record for January and 5.5°F departure. 
    There were 21 days the minimum temperature was below freezing during the month; the average is 21.3°F. 
    The minimum of 18.2°F on the 21st was the lowest minimum for the month a 10.4°F departure. 
    The 28.8°F temperature range on the 2nd was the largest temperature range for January and the 5.2°F was the least on the 14th.  
    The highest barometric pressure was 30.78 inches on January 9th which was the second highest pressure ever recorded at this station for January
    and the highest since February 13, 2018 when the pressure was 30.81 inches. 
    The lowest barometer was only 29.55 on the 4th which was the highest minimum for January in the past 11 years.  
    The Springfield Park station broke only fourteen 11-year daily records which was below average for January.
    The snowfall for January was only a trace of snow which was a -5.3-inch departure. The only other year with a trace was 2012. 
    The maximum wind for the month was 32 mph on the 12th which was a -3.1-mph departure. 
    January had 11 days with measurable precipitation and a total of 3.38 inches precipitation for January which was only a 0.08 departure.
           
    
    					Richmond International Airport 
    
    The mean temperature was 43.2°F with a departure of 5.3°F making it the 14th warmest mean temperature since 1897 
    and the 17th warmest since 1880. 
    The average maximum temp. was 52.6 a departure of 5.2°F and was the 16th warmest. 
    The lowest maximum temp. was 37°F; only 6 years have had a warmer low maximum temp. for January.
    The average minimum temperature was 33.8°F which was a 5.5°F departure and the 15th warmest since 1897.   
    The minimum temp. was below freezing on 19 days. 
    The highest temperature for January was 72°F on the 11th which tied the daily record for the date with 1975 and 1976.
    The 20°F minimum temperature for January on the 22nd was the highest for January since 2006.  
    The 4°F temperature range on the 14th was the lowest for the month. 
    The 32°F range on the 22nd was the highest temp. range for January 
    The Airport had eleven days with measurable precipitation giving 3.59 inches of precipitation which was a departure of 0.55 inches. 
    This was the 47th wettest January since 1887. Only a trace of sleet fell on the 18th. 
    The last time the Airport had no measurable frozen precip. in January was 2012.
     The frozen precipitation departure for January was -2.1 inches. 
    
    
    


FEBRUARY

    The mean temperature for February was 44.6°F, a +3.0°F departure and the 4th warmest Feb. 
    The warmest day was on the 4th as the daily mean was 57.5°F. 
    The lowest max. for the month was 40°F on the 20th the highest ever recorded for a low maximum in February. 
    There were 15 days below freezing a departure of -2.4 days; the average is 17.4 days. 
    The month had 4 periods warmer than average and 4 periods colder than average as can be observed from the graph.  
    The 3.78 inches of precipitation makes this February the 4th wettest on record with a departure of 0.83 inches. 
    The 1.61 inches of precip. in a calendar day on the 6th and the high 24-hour precipitation amount
     on the 6th-7th of 1.74 inches were both the 2nd highest recorded for February. 
    February had 14 days with measurable precipitation which tied for the most on record. 
    This month was also the 3rd cloudiest February on record; the record was set in 2018. 
    The average relative humidity was 71.9% and tied for the 2nd highest for February. 
    The average temperature range was 20.2°F which was the 4th lowest on record for February. 
    The average relative humidity was 71.9 percent, the 2nd highest on record, 
    and on the 26th the relative humidity never dropped below 97 percent which was a new record.
    The maximum wind gust during February was 50 mph which was a new record for the month occurring on February 7th.
    This was also the second highest wind ever recorded at this station for any month. (11years of records) 
    The wind run for the month was 2375 miles the 2th highest for February. 
    The highest barometer recorded for the month was 30.68 inches on the 15th which was the 4th highest for Feb.  
    The lowest was 29.06 inches on the 7th and was the lowest minimum barometric pressure on record for February and
     the lowest barometer since Hurricane Sandy on October 29, 2012. 
    Springfield Park had only a trace of snow in February a giving a -3.9 inch departure.

    Richmond International Airport The Richmond Airport had 5 daily records for February. (1) The highest daily temp. range was 38°F on the 23rd; the previous record was 37°F in 1942, 1943, 2014. (2) The 72°F max. temp. on the 4th tied the record in 1991. (3) The min. temp on the 4th of 57°F was a new record; the previous record was 51°F in 1952. Only 9 years have had a warmer min. since 1897. (4) The daily mean temp on the 3rd was 58.5°F and tied with 1989. (5) The daily mean for the 4th of 64.5°F was a new record; the previous record was 60°F in 1957. The max. temp. this month was 72°F on the 3rd& 4th. The minimum temperature this month was 20°F on the 22nd. The average max. temp. was 54.7°F a departure of 3.4°F. The ave. min. temp. of 35.2°F was a departure of 4.7°F. The mean temperature for February was 45°F a departure of 4.1°F. February was the 9th warmest since 1897 and the 14th warmest since 1880. Feb. lowest max. temp was 39°F; only 5 years were warmer since 1897. Only 10 years since 1887 have had more precip. than the 1.60 inches of rain on the 6th. The total precipitation for February was 3.59 inches with a surplus of 0.83 inches making it the 46th wettest February since 1887 and the 49th wettest since 1872. The airport had 13 days with precip. and 0.5 inches of snow on the 20th. February had a negative 3.3-inch snowfall departure.

MARCH
    MARCH 2020 SUMMARY
    
    					 	Springfield Park, Glen Allen, VA
    
    March was the cloudiest with the highest average relative humidity, lowest ave. temp. range, 
    second driest and second warmest on record.
    Only 2012 was warmer and only 2016 drier.   
    The mean temperature for March was 55.2°F which was a departure of 7.1°F.  
    Most of March was above average as the graph shows particularly on the minimum temps. 
    Springfield Park had only 3 days that the minimum temperature was less than or equal to 32°F; 
    the average is 11.6 days or a negative 8.6 day departure.
    The highest min. temp. was 70°F on the 20th which was the highest on record for March. 
    The 87.8°F on the 20th was a new maximum temp. for March. 
    The minimum temperature was 20.8°F on the 1st.  
    March had 10 days that the high temperature was less than or equal to 70°F and the average is 6.9 days. 
    This was the cloudiest March on record and clouds reduced the temp. range.  
    The 20.5°F average temp. range was also the lowest on record for March. 
    The average ground temperature at one foot for the month was 51.7°F which was a 3.5°F departure. 
    The average relative humidity was 67.7 Percent which was a 3.8 percent departure for March. 
    The dew point on March 29th was also a new record high for March topping 70°F.
    The 2.30 inches of precipitation for March was a -1.26 inch departure on the 11-year average
     and the driest since 2016. 
    There were 10 days with measurable precipitation; only 2018 had less for March.  
    The maximum wind gust during March was 35 mph which occurred on the 3rd & 10th 
    which ties for the lowest on record for March. 
    But the ave. daily wind run was 101 miles and the total wind run for March of 3131.3 miles. 
    They are both new records for March.
    The highest barometer was 30.62 inches on the 8th. 
    The lowest reading was 29.56 inches on the 3rd which was the 4th highest minimum reading on record. 
    There was not even a trace of snow in March which was the 2nd time on record for this station. 
    The winter season had only 0.1 inches of frozen precip. the least on record. 
    (Springfield Park has 11 years of records.) 
    Even with the 0.3 inches of snow in November it was the least snow on record for the winter season;
     the previous minimum record was 1.7 inches in the winter of 2008-09.
    
    
    					Richmond International Airport 
    
    The average maximum temperature was 64.9°F which was a  4.9°F departure. 
    The average minimum was 44.7°F which was 7.6°F departure. 
    The mean temperature for March was 54.8°F which was 6.2°F above the 30-year mean temperature. 
    This was the 4th warmest March on record since 1880. 
    The 3 warmer Marches were in 1945 58.5°F, 2012 58.3°F, and 1921 57.6°F.  
    The lowest maximum temp. for March was 49°F on the 23rd  an only 2 years in March has the temp. been higher. 
    The highest minimum temp. or warmest night in March was 65°F that occurred on the 20th 
    and only 4 nights have been warmer in March since 1897. 
    The highest temperature was 88°F on the 20th and 29th, and the lowest temperature of 21 was on the 1st. 
     This March had only 2 days that the minimum temperature was less than or equal to 32°F. 
    This is the least since 1945 and only 1903 had less since 1897.
    The total precipitation for March was 2.66 inches which is a departure of -1.38 inches 
    making it the 43rd driest March since 1887. 
    March had 11 days with measurable precipitation.
    The Richmond International Airport had two daily record this March. 
    The 88°F maximum temperature on the 20th was a new high record for the date in March; 
    the previous record was 85°F in 1948. 
    The daily mean temp. of 76.5°F was a record high daily mean temp. on the 20th; 
    the previous record was 75°F in 1945. 
    Only 4 times since 1897 has March had such a warm daily mean; the highest daily mean is 78.5 in 1907.  
    The average daily temperature range for March was 20.1°F the 27th lowest since 1897.
    There was not even a trace of snow in March and for the winter season Dec, Jan, Feb 
    the total snowfall was only 0.6 inches the least since the winter of 2008-09.
    
    
    


APRIL
    APRIL 2020 SUMMARY

    April was the second wettest on record with 4.68 inches of precipitation and
    a 1.35 inch departure with 17 days of measurable precipitation which
    set a new record for the month; the previous record was only 13 days.  
    The 1.44 inches of precipitation that fell on the 30th tied for the 2nd greatest precip. in a day in April and
     was 31 percent of the total precip. for April
    The cloud cover for April was 4th highest on record. 
    The average relative humidity for the month was 69.2 percent and was 5.1 percent above the average making it 
    the 2nd highest average relative humid on record for April. 
    On April 7th during a thunderstorm 0.24 inches of rain was recorded in 5 minutes 
    which set a new 11-year 5 minute record for the station for April.
    The mean temperature for April of 56.6deg;F was the 3rd lowest on record with a departure of -2.7deg;F. 
    The average maximum of 68.5deg;F was the 3rd lowest for April with the average minimum temperature of 44.7deg;F in the past 11 years. 
    The monthly maximum temperature for April of 82.2deg;F on the 13th was the 2nd lowest maximum temperature on record for April. 
    The lowest monthly maximum was 81deg;F in 2015. When looking at the graph for April, 
    note the nights where cool and below average about 75 percent of the month. 
    The warmest night was on April 13th with a minimum of 59.6deg;F which was the coolest high minimum for any April in the past 11 years.
    The lowest minimum temperature was 33.3deg;F recorded on the 19th with a light patchy frost.  
    But no freezing temperatures were recorded in April which has occurred only 4 times in the past 11 years. 
    The average temperature range for April was 23.8deg;F which was 4th highest on record.
    The maximum range for April was 35deg;F on April 19th which was the 2nd lowest maximum temp. range on record for April.
    On April 13th at 8:35 AM a 43 mph wind gust from the SSE was recorded which was a new high wind record and it did not occur during a thunderstorm.

    April had 18 days with measurable precip. which ties with 1918 for the most in the past 133 years.
    April was the 19th wettest April since 1887 with 4.71 inches of precipitation which was a departure of 1.44 inches above the average.
    The greatest daily precipitation was 1.70 inches on the 30th which was 36 percent of the total for April. 
    Only 14 years have had more precipitation in April in a calendar day. 
    This was also a daily record for the 30th; the previous record was only 0.93 inches in 1895.
    The average maximum temperature of 68.7deg;F was a departure of -1.6deg;F. 
    The average minimum temperature of 45.1deg;F was a departure of 1.0deg;F. 
    The average mean temperature was 56.9deg;F which was the 52nd coolest April since 1897 and a negative 1.3deg;F departure. 
    The highest temperature for April was only 83deg;F on the 13th. 
    Only 11 of the 123 years have had a lower reading and the lowest is 80deg;F. 
    The maximum temperature range for April was only 35deg;F and 
    only 8 years in the past 123 years have had a lower maximum temp. range for April; the record low range was 32deg;F in 1911.
    
    The Airport had 2 daily records for April.
    On the 22nd the 33deg;F record low minimum temperature; the previous record was 34deg;F recorded in 1953, 1950, and 1934.
    On the 30th the 1.70 inches of precipitation was a new record; the previous record was only 0.93 inches recorded in 1895.
    
    


MAY
    MAY 2020 SUMMARY
    
    					Springfield Park, Glen Allen, VA
    
    The mean temperature was 63.7°F a -5.3°F departure and the coolest May on record for Springfield Park. 
    Springfield Park had no 90°F days in May for the first time since 2013; last year May had seven 90°F days. 
    The average maximum was 73.8°F a -5.6°F departure and the average minimum was 53.6°F a -5.0°F departure. 
    The max. temp. for May was 87.1°F on the 29th which is a new record, the lowest max. temp. for May. 
    The highest temp. for 2020 is still March 20th with an observation of 87.8°F for the maximum. 
    The lowest minimum was 30.8°F on the 9th and 10th which was 5.2°F colder than the previous record.  
    May 9th had a daily mean of 45.3°F making it the coldest May day on record. 
            May was also the 3rd cloudiest and had only 11 days with measurable rainfall but 18 days if traces were counted.  
    The average ground temp. at 1 foot was 63°F the lowest on record for May. 
    The AM sky was the cloudiest on record for May. From May 17th to May 30th inclusive, 14 mornings were cloudy.  
    My tomato plants are the smallest on record at the end of May.
            May, with 2.19 inches of precipitation, was the driest May on record; the previous record was 2.37 inches in 2015. 
    But with cool temps and the cloudy skies the rainfall shortage wasn’t felt.
            The total wind run of 2347.8 miles made May the windiest on record. 
    The maximum wind for the month however was only 34 mph on the 8th as May had no strong storms. 
    May had only 1 day with thunder which was the least on record for May.

    Richmond International Airport The mean temp. for May was 63.8°F a -2.6°F dep. which made it the 20th coolest May on record since 1880. The average maximum for May was 73.8°F a -4.1°F departure and only ten Mays have been cooler since 1897. The average minimum was 53.8°F a – 1.2°F departure. The maximum temperature for May was 87°F on the 3rd and 16th; only 7 years were lower since 1897. The lowest recorded temperature in May was 32°F on the 10th which was not only a record for the date but was only one degree from the lowest temperature ever recorded in May in the past 140 years; only the record of 31°F recorded in 1956 was lower. The lowest daily temperature range for May was 4°F on the 18th. Only May of 1917 and 2003 had a lower daily temp. range. The 47.0°F daily mean temperature on the 9th was the 7th lowest on record for May in the past 123 years. The 73°F minimum on the 29th was only 1 degree from the highest minimum temperature for May. The record was 74°F in 1991. The Richmond International Airport had 1.90 inches of precipitation or the driest May since 2015. May was the 18th driest May since 1887. The spring season this year had 9.26 inches of precipitation the least since 2012 when only 7.36 inches of precipitation was recorded. JUNE
    JUNE 2020 SUMMARY
    
     					Springfield Park, Glen Allen, VA
    
    June had a warm period from the 2nd to the 11th and a cool period from the 12th to the 21st. 
    The temperatures from the 22nd to the end of June were near average (See the Graph) which balanced out as a near average June.
    The mean temperature for June was 75.7°F with a - 0.4°F departure which was the 6th coolest June on record.
     The highest temperature for the month was 94.5°F on the 4th and there were 11 days greater than or equal to 90°F days a 1.6-day departure. 
    There were 6 days the minimum temperature was greater than or equal to 70°F and the average is 9 days. 
    The maximum average temperature for June was 85.6°F a -0.6°F departure.
     Springfield Park had 19 new daily records for the 12 years of records. 
    The highest daily temperature range in June was 29°F on June 8th which tied for 4th greatest for June. 
    June was a windy month with a total wind run of 2051.4 miles for the month a new record. 
    The average wind run for the day of 68.4 miles was also a new record for June.  
    The windy part of June was in the first 17 days.
    The maximum wind for June at this station was only 25 mph on the 22nd at 1446 preceding a thunderstorm. 
    June had the lowest maximum wind speed as there was not any strong thunderstorms but many weak storms. 
    Thunder was heard on 8 days during June which tied for the most on record for June but none of the 8 thunderstorms were severe. 
    The strongest thunderstorm was on the 19th and was of note mainly for heavy rain. 
    The average barometric pressure was 30.00 inches of mercury the 2nd highest on record for June. 
    The lowest pressure for June was 29.71 a new record maximum for June.
    The 4.79 inches of rain made June the 6th wettest June on record but was near average for June based on a 12-year average.

    The Richmond International Airport had 5.25 inches of precipitation for June which was a +1.32-inch departure, 
    making it the 39th wettest June on record since 1897.  
    There were only 12 days with precipitation and 2 days had more than one inch of rain on the 11th and 25th.  
    The most rain in a day was 1.30 inches on June 11th.
    The  maximum temperature average for June was 85.0°F a -1.1°F departure. 
    The  highest maximum temperature for June was 94°F on the 4th and lowest maximum temperature for June was 67°F on the 16th. 
    The Airport had 10 days the maximum temperature was greater than or equal to 90°F.  
    The minimum temperature average for June was 65.6°F a 1.1°F departure. 
    The lowest minimum temperature for June was 54°F on the 1st and highest minimum temperature for June was 73°F on the 4th, 10th, 28th.

JULY
    JULY 2020 SUMMARY
    
     					Springfield Park, Glen Allen, VA
    
    July was the hottest on record and tied for the second greatest precipitation total with very clear skies. 
    Only July 2011 had clearer skies in the past 12 years.
    The July mean temperature here was 83.2°F a +3.2 °F departure.  
    July had 30 days with 90°F or above temperatures and the maximum temperature for July was 101.2°F 
    recorded on July 21st which is the highest maximum temperature here since July 21, 2019 when 102.3°F was recorded.  
    The highest minimum temperature here for July was 76.9°F on the 20th. 
    On 25 nights the minimum temperature was 70 °F or higher. 
    Springfield Park had 29 consecutive days of = or>90°F from July 3rd to the 31st which was a new record.  
    The average maximum temperature 94.1°F set a new record for July. 
    The lowest minimum temperature was 65.8°F on the 12th which was the 2nd highest on record for July; 
    only 2012 had a higher reading. 
    The high temperature range for July was 27°F on the 3rd & the lowest monthly daily temperature range was 16.6°F on the 7th. 
    The average temperature range for July was 21.8°F which was the 4th highest in the past 12 years.
    Springfield Park had 2.95 inches of precip. on the 1st of July which was 51 percent of the total for July. 
    total and had only ten days with measurable precipitation. 
    The 2.95 inches was the most rain in a calendar day and also broke the record for the most rain
     in a 24-hour period and the most in one hour. 
    Springfield Park had 5.79 inches of precip. for July and only July 2013 had more precip. 
    This was the wettest July since 2016 which also recorded 5.79 inches. 
    The 0.38 inches of rain that occurred in five minutes on the 1st was the 3rd most intense rain on record for July. 
    The Richmond International Airport had 2.99 inches less rain for the month than Springfield Park  
    The highest wind gust of 23 mph on the 22nd and 23rd is tied for the 2nd lowest on record for July.  
    We had 9 thunderstorms and all were weak in terms of wind.

    July was extremely hot and the Richmond International Airport had a mean monthly average of 82.9°F. 
    July was the hottest on record for Richmond in the past 139 years or since 1880.  
    The previous record was 82.8°F in 2010 at the Airport.  
    July also tied the hottest month for Richmond which was August 1900 with a mean temperature of 82.9°F.  
    Also, a point of interest. 
    The early temperature records of Richmond are rooftop readings which have a warm bias and
     we are now exceeding these observations.  
    The Richmond International Airport had an average mean temperature was 82.9°F was a departure of 3.6°F.  
    The lowest max temp was 88°F on July 1st which was the highest on record for the 123-year period and 
    was 5°F more than the previous record. 
    There were no real breaks from the heat during this July; it was continuous!
     The graph shows very few negative departures. 
    The average maximum temperature was 93.6°F, a 3.9°F departure and is the 3rd warmest since 1897.  
    The average minimum was 72.2°F which was a 3.3°F departure and is the 3rd warmest since 1897. 
    The highest min. temp. was 78°F and only 6 years were warmer. 
    The Airport had 22 consecutive days of = or>90°F from the 10th to the 31st and for the month they had 26 days of greater than or equal to90°F heat. 
    The Airport record ties the 26 days set in 1993 and 1894 checking records back to 1880.  
    July also had 27 nights the low temperature was 70°F or higher; the average is 14.4 for the 123-year period. 
    The lowest temp recorded during July was 66°F and only 1994 with 67°F was warmer. 
    The lowest daily mean temp. was 77.5°F which is the highest ever recorded for Richmond; 
    the previous record was 77.0°F in 1994.
    The Airport had only 2.80 inches as rainfall amounts varied greatly because of thunderstorms.

AUGUST
    AUGUST 2020 SUMMARY
    
    					Springfield Park, Glen Allen, VA 
    August had the greatest number of days with measurable precipitation more than any month in the past 12 years 
    and the wettest August and the second wettest of all months. 
    August was also the most humid on record and the second cloudiest on record.  
    The 10.96 inches of rain for August was a +6.54-inch departure based on a 12-year average.

The average maximum was 87.6°F, a 0°F departure, and the average minimum was 70.9°F which was a 3.5°F departure. Only 2 Augusts had a higher average minimum temperature since 1897. This August had 10 days with temperatures of equal to or greater than 90°F and 22 nights the low temperature was equal to or greater than 70°F; the average is 11 for the 123-year period. The average temperature range for August was only 16.7°F because of the high humidity, rain and clouds; only 6 years have had a lower range for August since 1897. The highest daily temperature range for the month was 23°F on the 27th and only 2 Augusts have had lower since 1897. The minimum range was 8°F on the 15th. The highest monthly temperature was 96°F on the 2nd. The lowest monthly maximum temperature was 76°F on the 15th. The lowest minimum temperature for August was 64°F on the 17th and only 2 Augusts were warmer in the past 123 years, 1898 and 1900. The Airport had 15.34 inches of precipitation, a departure of +10.68 inches which made August the 2rd wettest since 1872 or 148 years. Only Aug. of 2004 has had more precipitation with 16.30 inches. The Richmond International Airport had 5 daily records or ties for August. 1. On August 24th the minimum temperature of 75°F tied with 1968 for the highest min. temperature for the date. 2. On August 29th the minimum temperature of 78°F was a new record; the previous record was 74°F set in 2018, 2006, 1993, 1900. Only 4 Augusts since 1897 have had a higher minimum temperature. 3. The 3.61 inches of precipitation on the 4th was the greatest precip. for the date; the previous record was 2.50 inches in 1948.     September with 5.62 inches of precipitation was the 4TH wettest September on record. 
    The wettest Sep. recorded 8.54 inches in 2018 and the driest Sep. had 0.17 inches just last year. 
    The greatest 24-hour rain was 2.43 inches on the 25th & 26th  the 6th greatest on record. 
    The 1.11 inches of rain on the 26th in 1-hour set a new Sep. rainfall intensity record. 
    Sept. had 13 days with measurable precip; the average is 9.8 days. 
          The monthly mean temperature was 69.2°Fa -3.0°Fdeparture and the 2nd lowest on record. 
    The ave. maximum temp. was 78.4°Fa -3.6°Fdeparture and the lowest on record for Sep. 
    The ave. minimum was 60.0°Fwhich was a -2.6°Fdeparture.  
    The lowest minimum temperature for the month was 40.5°Fon the 22nd and was the lowest temp. ever 
    recorded at this station in the month of Sep. 
    The highest maximum was 94.1°Fon the 3rd which was 0.5°Fabove the 12-year average Sep. maximum. 
    September’s sky was very near the 12-years average.
     The average temp. range was 18.4°Fwhich was a departure of -0.8°F. 
    This September had only 3 days with temps. greater than or equal to 90°F; last year it was 11 days.

    The Richmond International Airport had 6.92 inches of precipitation which was a departure of 2.79 inches
     and the wettest since 2016. 
    Only 12 Septembers have been wetter since 1887. 
    The Airport had 13 days with measurable precipitation and only 8 Septembers have had more since 1887. 
    The Airport’s max. daily precip. was 2.86 inches on the 17th.
    Last year the Airport had only 0.42 inches, one of the driest on record.
    The ave. mean temperature was 69.7°Fa departure of -0.9°Fand the 43rd coolest since 1897. 
    The ave. maximum was 78.5°F, a -2.7°Fdeparture, and the ave. minimum temp. was 60.8°Fwhich was a 0.7°Fdeparture. 
    Sept. 2019 had 12 days with temperatures of greater than or equal to 90°Fand this year it was only 3 days. 
    The ave. temperature range was 17.7°Fthe 19th lowest on record; last year the range was 22.7°F. 
    The 9th and 17th set new daily low temperature range records since 1897 for Sept. (See daily records below). 
    It is interesting that the Airport set daily record low temp. ranges for the 9th and the 17th and 
    Springfield didn’t set a 12-year record low range for either date. 
    The Airport’s highest temperature range for Sept. was only 30°Fon the 23rd. 
    The highest max. temperature was 93°Fon the 3rd and 4th. 
    The lowest max. temp. for Sept. was 65°Fon the 19th. The lowest minimum temperature was 45°F
    on the 22nd and the highest minimum was 74°Fon the 2nd and 10th. 
    This month for the first time has a graph for the Airport. 
    The difference is the Airport averages are for a 30-year period and smoothed. 
    Springfield Park is just the average of the 12 past years and is not smooth.
    
    The Richmond had 5 daily records in records back to 1897.

    OCTOBER 2020 SUMMARY

    October had only 9 days with measurable precip but was the wettest October on record with 6.64 inches and a 2.27 inch departure.  
    August was also the wettest on record and Springfield Park already has 50.13 inches for 2020. 
    The remnants of Zeta gave 1.43 inches on the 29th and a night-time cold front with thunder added 
    an additional 1.30 for a total of 2.73 inches. 
    From 4 AM of the 29 to AM of the 30th 2.55 inches was recorded in 24 hours, the 3rd greatest for October in 24 hours. 
    The highest temperature for the month was only 84.3°F on the 24th which was a -2.8°F departure in the past 12 years. 
    The average maximum temperature was 71.9°F, a 0.7°F departure, and 
    the average minimum temperature was 51.6°F which was a 1.2°F departure. 
    The monthly mean temperature was 61.8°F, a departure of 1.2°F, and was the 5th warmest October on record in the past 12 years. 
    The lowest minimum temperature was 38.0°F on the 16th and 31st a 4.2°F departure with a little frost on roofs but no killing frost. 
    The average temperature range of 20.3°F for October was a -0.7°F departure. 
    The average relative humidity was 80.5% a new record for October and a departure of 5.8%.  
    On the 12th the relative humidity never fell below 97% during a rainy day.
    The maximum wind gust of 34 mph was recorded from the remnants of Zeta on the 29th.

    The Richmond International Airport’s average mean temperature was 62.3°F a departure of 2.6°F
     and only 18 Octobers have been warmer since 1897. 
    The average maximum was 72.2°F, a 1.2°F departure, and the average minimum was 52.4°F which was a 4.1°F departure. 
    and was the 14th warmest since 1897. 
    October’s highest temperature was 84°F on the 24th.  
    The warmest day was the 21st with a daily mean of 72.5°F. 
    Last year the maximum for the month was 98°F on the 2nd. 
    October had 21 days the high temperature was equal to or higher than 70°F. 
    The lowest maximum temperature for October was 56°F on the 31st which was also the coolest October day with a daily mean of 48.0°F.  
    The lowest monthly minimum temp. was 40°F on the 31st. 
    Only three Octobers since 1897 have had a warmer monthly minimum greater than 40°F for October. 
    The highest temperature range for October was only 29°F on the 6th. 
    Only four Octobers since 1897 have had a lower maximum temperature for the month.
    The Richmond International Airport had only one daily record for the month. (Richmond Records since 1897).  
    The minimum temperature range was only 4°F on the 11th tying the minimum temperature range for the date; 
    the previous years for this range were 1952 and 1903. 
    The Airport had 5.63 inches of precipitation, a departure of 2.65 inches, with 8 days of measurable precipitation.

    This mean of 54.7°F for November was a departure of 6.1°F from the 12-year ave., was the warmest on record. 
    The highest daily mean temp. was 70.4°F on the 11th which was the 3rd highest on record 
    and had the highest dew point on record for November.
    November was the 5th wettest on record (records since 2008) as the monthly precipitation was 4.35 inches, 
    a 0.79 inches departure when compared with Springfield Park’s 12-year average.
    Precipitation occurred on 9 days in November and the 2nd clearest on record; the previous record was 2010.
    The highest maximum temperature for November was 78.9°F on the 10th which was the 4th warmest on record for November. 
    This month also had 6 days equal to or warmer than 75°F which was a record for November. 
    The average maximum temperature was 66.8°F with a departure of 7.0°F which was a new record maximum average for November. 
    The ave. min. temp. was 42.5°F which was the 2nd highest on record for November. 
    The lowest minimum was 26.3°F recorded on the 19th which was the 3rd highest for November. 
    The highest minimum was 67.6°F which was a 9.7°F departure, a new record for November. 
    There were only 3 days that the minimum temperature was less than or equal to 32°F which was -5.9 days less than average. 
    The average ground temp. at 1 foot was 56.9°F a 3.0 °F departure and the highest on record for November. 
    There was no snow recorded in November at Springfield Park. The maximum wind gust was only 33 mph from the SSW on the 15th. 
    The lowest barometer was 29.36 inches on the 30th and was the 2nd lowest on record for November.

    Autumn Season Sep., Oct., Nov., 2020 This autumn was 1.4°F warmer than ave. based on a 12-year ave. as both Oct & Nov were above ave. Glen Allen’s 2020 average autumn temp. was 61.9°F the 2nd warmest autumn on record. Glen Allen had the 3rd wettest autumn with 16.61 inches of precipitation and a departure of 4.88 inches.

    Richmond International Airport The November mean temperature was 54.6°F which was the 4th warmest since 1880 with a departure from normal of 4.2°F. The years that were warmer were 1985,1902,1896. The 4.43 inches of precipitation was a departure of 1.19 inches making this month the 25st wettest November of the past 133 years. November had only 7 days with measurable precipitation. The greatest daily precipitation was 1.48 inches on the 30th. There was no snow in November at the Airport. The warmest day was November 10th with 78°F and the lowest temperature was 27°F on the 19th. The average maximum was 66.3°F which was a departure of 4.9°F and the 4th highest on record since 1897. The average min. was 42.9°F which was a departure of 3.5°F and the 7th highest on record since 1897. The warmest daily minimum was 62°F on the 11th and only 20 Novembers have been higher. The Airport had 12 days the maximum temp was 70°F or higher and only 3 days the minimum temp. was 32°F or less. The Airport had 2 daily records for the month. The minimum of 62°F on the 11th was the highest minimum on record for the date; the previous record was 59°F set in 1935. The mean temperature for the same day was 68.5°F which was a new record for the date; the previous record was 68.0 also in 1935.

    Autumn Season Sep., Oct., Nov., 2020 The fall season was 2.0°F warmer than normal based on a 30-yr. average. The fall season ave. of 62.2°F was the 12 warmest autumn since 1880. The warmest autumn average was 65.8°F in 1881. The fall precipitation was 10.35 inches, a departure of 6.63 inches, based on a 30-year average. This was the wettest autumn since 2006 when 22.31 inches was recorded. The year 2006 holds the record for the wettest autumn since precipitation records started in 1872



DECEMBER

    December was the third wettest December and the 6th coolest December in the past 12 years of records. 
    The monthly mean temperature was 41.2°F, a -1.3°F departure from the 12-year average. 
    December had its highest maximum of 72.4°F on December 13th but had only 2 days of equal to or greater than 65°F for the month. 
    On 22 days, the min. reached freezing or below which was 3rd greatest in December in the past 12-years. 
    The lowest temperature was only 19.9°F occurring on the 26th with also the lowest wind chill of 9°F. 
             On December 7th Springfield Park had a little snowfall of only 0.2 inches but 7 Decembers have had less. 
    What is surprising is this is the only measurable snow for 2020 and the lowest annual total. 
    The precipitation total for the month was 5.99 inches which was a 1.88-inch departure based on a 12-year average. 
    There were 10 days with measurable precipitation. 
    The total precipitation for the year was 60.47 inches which was a 12.63-inch surplus and our second wettest year. 
    The cloud cover for the month was the 3rd lowest for December as many of the rains came at night. 
    The highest barometric pressure for December was 30.58 inches recorded on the 29th and 30th  and 
    the lowest was 29.42 inches on the 25th which is average for the month.  
    It is interesting that the highest wind was only 27 mph on the 5th but the wind run for the month was 2215 miles
     a new record for December because most days were breezy as well as several nights. 
      
    
    
    
    					Richmond International Airport 
    
    The total precipitation for 2020 was 63.52 inches which was a 19.92-inch surplus for the year making this 
    the third wettest year on record for Richmond in 148-years. 
    The 30-year average for Richmond is 43.60 inches. 
    The wettest year was 1889 with 72.02 inches and 2018 was the second wettest with 63.73 inches. 
    The 6.70 inches of precipitation for December made it the 5th wettest December since 1872. 
    Richmond had 2.02 inches of rain on the 5th which was the 7th largest daily rainfall for Richmond in December since 1887 
    and also set a new daily record for December 5th. 
    The previous record for the 5th was 1.30 inches in 2005. 
    The 14th had 1.58 inches of rain which also set a new daily record for that date; the previous record was 1.38 inches in 1907. 
    These were the only 2 daily records for the month. The Richmond International Airport had 1.0 inches of snow on December 7th. 
    The total snowfall for 2020 was 1.5 inches the least since 0.8 inches occurred in 2008.
    The mean temperature for the Richmond International Airport was 41.3°F which was departure of only 0.3°F. 
    December was the 51st warmest in the past 123 years. The average max. temp was 51.1°F a departure of only 0.4°F. 
    The average min. temp was 31.5°F a departure of only 0.1°F.  
    The lowest maximum temperature of 36°F for December occurred on the 7th. 
    The highest temp. in Dec. was 71°F on the 13th and was the only 70°F temp. for December. 
    The Airport had 22 days the min. temp. was 32°F or lower.
