Mar. 17, 2014
.3    30.7  A heavy period of sleet occurred between midnight and 12:30 AM and then became lighter. The hard period of sleet during this pass hour was more than the heater could melt so the liquid amount is not recorded here.
0200 hrs.   0.5    30.1  The sleet was lighter this past hour. Sleet all collects at the bottom of the funnel and all of the heated upper surface of the funnel does nothing to melt the sleet. Because of this the heater still hasn't melted all the sleet so the liquid amount is omitted.
0300 hrs.   0.6    29.8  Only light sleet this past hour but the heater still hasn't melted all the sleet so the liquid amount is omitted.
0400 hrs.   0.7    29.7  An auxiliary 75 watt heat source was put on to catch up on the melting by the next hour.
0500 hrs.   0.7  0.44  29.0  All the sleet is now melted in the tripping bucket gauge and also checked with accumulations in a 4 inch gauge. The 0.42 inches is since midnight the total for yesterday was 0.14 inches or a storm total of 0.56 inches. During the past hour no additional accumulation only ice grains the equivalent of frozen drizzle. The radar is indicating Glen Allen is near the back edge of the precipitation.
0600 hrs.   0.7  0.44  28.4  During the past hour no additional accumulation only very fine light ice grains the equivalent of frozen drizzle.
0800 hrs.   0.7  0.44  27.6  Another period of sleet and light snow just started at 0752.
0900 hrs.   0.8  0.45  27.2  The period of snow ended after about 15 minutes and went back to light ice grains the equivalent of frozen drizzle.
1000 hrs.   0.8  0.45  27.0   Not enough snow during the past hour to make a difference. Howerer, the radar indicates additional precipitation for the next hour. The temperature has decreased 0.2°F since the past hour when it would normally be increasing.
1100 hrs.   1.0  0.47  27.6  All snow during this past hour and the current intensity is between light and moderate snowfall.
1200 hrs.   1.3  0.50  28.8  Radar shows snowfall should soon end at least temporarily.
1300 hrs.   1.3  0.51  29.1   Looking at the radar it appears that most of the next precipitation will pass to our South. Currently there is no precipitation falling. The last very light precipitation ended at approximately 1230.
1500 hrs.   1.3  0.51  28.7  Flurries and very light snow and a little sleet but not enough for any additional accumulation. The total frozen accumulation for this storm was 1.3 inches today and 0.1 inches yesterday or 1.4 inches.
